For our twenty fourth monthly flourishing business community speaker series: stories from the field, the community is delighted to welcome stefan rasporich from infinite mind pictures, based in Calgary, Canada.
The Flourishing Enterprise Co-lab is grateful for the support of Social Innovation at Georgian College, Ontario, Canada, to put on our speaker series.
infinite mind pictures’ mission statement is “to imagine a sustainable future and act to make it a reality”. Today this means storyworld and game-based design learning as key features. infinite mind pictures partners with schools around the world via Outschool, as well as with organizations focused on entrepreneurial and employment skills development including: MRU, NSTEP, Blood Tribe Employment and Skills Training.
stefan rasporich is a teacherpreneur: a career and technology studies high school teacher at Bow Valley High School in Cochrane, Alberta (Ages 11-18), actor, screenwriter, co-founder and director of operations of infinite mind pictures.
stefan’s ethos as a teacher is to ‘walk the talk’ to understand his students’ beginner’s perspective, and as a result he finds himself at the intersection of the arts, technology, games and business. As a recent example, this past summer, in collaboration with Bow Valley College’s Indie Ignition entrepreneurial pitch competition, he designed and ran a competition for creative startups that was hosted by the Calgary International Film Festival.
stefan explores with students what keeps them engaged in a variety of classes (Game Design, Computer Science, Robotics, Audio/Visual Design), and then funnel discoveries made collectively, through game-based design learning, into courses offered by infinite mind pictures.
Almost every class starts with randomized groups of students building sustainable villages, starships and media studios with UN Sustainable Development Goals-Minecraft Animals. For classes focused on Enterprise & Innovation, he has experimented with designing interactive marketplaces inside the starship, resourced from the villages, and gained insight into Flourishing and Lean Canvas comparisons as students prepared pitches for entrepreneurial competitions.
During his talk stefan will highlight:
- The benefits and challenges of gamifying the Flourishing Business Canvas using Minecraft
- The benefits realized in having intentional instructional design focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals
- How engaged youth are with sustainability
- How this leads students to discover that we need to work together across generations and attitudes to truly flourish on Spaceship Earth
- Challenges encountered / opportunities for further work in inclusive instructional design to best support neurodiverse groups of students, for example, reconsidering rubrics such as ‘makes eye contact’ that may work well for neurotypical or large cultural groups, but not for all.
- What does infinite mind pictures hope to gain from participating in the Flourishing Business Community?
- What can infinite mind pictures offer to the community?
At the end of his talk stefan will take questions from members of the community. After the event, a video of the talk plus slides will be shared in the “Speaker Series” space of the Flourishing Business Community. Please join other flourishing business leaders and become a full member to access.
